Artist's bio: Hanson Puthuff was a transplanted mid-Westerner who received his art training at Univ. of Denver Art School & Chicago Academy of Fine Art. He began his career as a commercial artist painting billboards but in his spare time he would paint ‘plein aire’ landscape oil paintings which after 23 years, he finally received recognition for his works & took up landscape painting full time in 1926, painting the wide open California scenery: beautiful landscapes along the coast of Los Angeles & the foothills of San Gabriel mountains as well as deserts of the Southwest.
He became associated with a group called the Garvanza Circle (a district of East Los Angeles) artists who were inspired by the Southwest which included Maynard Dixon, Granville Redmond to name few. He was considered an important California landscape artist & was co-founder of the California Art Club & Laguna Beach Art Association. He was a leading force in the California art scene until his death in Corona del Mar in 1972. This particular piece ‘Blue Hills & Winding Rivers’ has been kept hidden from the public for probably over 60 years. Fresh on the market for all to see – a wonderful example of Puthuff’s magic.
